Space-A With Dependents: Eligibility, Documents and Family Backup Planning

Dependent Space-A eligibility is tied to the sponsor's status and the specific travel authority being used. Family travel gets easier when eligibility, documents and the backup plan are settled before chasing a flight.

Start with the correct eligibility authority

AMC publishes Categories I–VI from DoDI 4515.13 and includes multiple dependent-travel situations. The category can change depending on whether the sponsor is active duty, retired, Guard/Reserve, on EML, deployed, or traveling under another authorized status.

Have every traveler's documents ready

AMC directs travelers to ensure required passports, visas and other travel documents are current. International requirements can change, and dependent documentation can differ by destination and sponsor status.

Build a family-sized fallback

A backup that works for one traveler may fail for a family. Price enough commercial seats, lodging, ground transportation and baggage for the whole party before repositioning to a terminal.

Quick answers

Common questions

Can dependents always travel Space-A without the sponsor?

No. Eligibility depends on the sponsor's status and the specific authority. Check the current AMC eligibility category and required documentation.

Do children need passports for international Space-A travel?

International documentation depends on destination and traveler status. Verify current passport, visa and host-nation requirements before travel.

Should families have a commercial backup?

Yes. AMC advises Space-A travelers to be prepared for commercial costs if the military travel option changes or disappears.
